Berdorf - An offbeat commune in Luxembourg

My husband's Luxembourgish friend, Pascal, came home to pick us up. He invited us over to his place in Berdorf. He had a large farm and a huge cheese factory. En route we visited a charming waterfall which is on the Mullerthal hike trail. I have already been on this hike with my husband and his friend so we didn't hike this time, especially since we were with my in-laws. We simply enjoyed the waterfalls and the absorbed the greenery.

We headed to his house straight from here, a 40 minute drive from Luxembourg city centre. They make goat cheese, cheese from cow and other dairy products. We had fun feeding the goats and patting the cows. Pascal had named his cows. He introduced us to his cute cows one by one as we walked through the factory where they milked the cows using machines. He demonstrated how the cows were lured to milking partition, how they were inseminated and how the cows were maintained and taken care of. To visit this place after the Jallikattu protest in Chennai, I was shocked to hear that they were artificially inseminated with Jersey breed. Anyway, the cows were cute, the milk tasted good and the people are healthy so how does it matter.

Waiting to meet me

Remember, He's more afraid of you than you are of him

We enjoyed the tour around his cheese factory. Pascal explained the entire process of cheese making and proudly showed us the equipment that go behind making one of the best diary products including flavoured yogurts, in the country. As a former biotech student, it felt like an industrial visit. We did a little bit of cheese tasting at his shop after we were exhausted from the trip.

Everything has a first time and this day was full of firsts for me as I have never been to a farm either. Since it was very vast we couldn't visit his apple farm (may be next time) but we did pay a visit to his vegetable and green house farm. I had radish and carrot plucked directly from ground and they never tasted better. I tasted raspberries straight from the plant and it is now my favourite fruit next to strawberry.

It was a bit overwhelming and a happy tour at the same time. To see nature at it's best, fruits and vegetables abundantly growing at home and pets that are as cute as babies, I would give anything to stay close to something like that.

Little things: Be sure to taste pepper, jalapeno and cumin flavours of cheese and berry flavours in yogurt.

Tip from the trip: Take a hike at Mullerthal but be prepared because the trail is long. It is not a difficult trek but a long hike.
